THE EDITOR, Sir:
This is in response to your Letter of the Day, 'Plight of A Rape Victim', in the Friday Gleaner of April 8, 2005. I really empathise with Nadia Black and more so her friend who was a victim of rape.
Once again we hear of another episode of violence being perpetrated on the women in our society. It was even more disturbing that this occurred in the victim's home. Absolutely no one anywhere is safe.
I must say, however, that what disturbed me most was Nadia?s account of how the police handled the matter. From her account, the police lacked the sensitivity and the professionalism needed for matters of this nature. I must say that the authorities need to address the issues raised by her immediately.
I hope that those female officers of whom she spoke are aware that they themselves are not immune to such acts and thus they too may require the same services in the very near future at the rate at which our society is disintegrating.
This is an issue that affects us all and we should ensure that we all come together and take a stand against it, regardless of who or where the person comes from. Our compassion should be to all rich, poor, uptown, downtown, rural, urban, police or civilian otherwise the next victim could be anyone of us.
I am, etc.,
