Brown wants more benefits for workers in sugar sector
published: Monday | April 11, 2005

Richard Morais, Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE DISPARITY between sums paid out to sugar workers who die on the job and their counterparts in the penal system has irked Lambert Brown, vice-president of the University and Allied Workers Union, who wants to see the anomaly corrected.

Speaking against the background of last week's accidental death of a worker at the Long Pond Sugar Factory in Clarks Town, Trelawny, Mr. Brown told The Gleaner that he wants the matter to be reviewed quickly by the government through its trade union laws.

"If a prison warder dies on the job, his beneficiary is guaranteed $4 million," said Mr. Brown. "However, if a sugar worker dies, his beneficiary will get less than $50,000."

The UAWU vice-president said, "This can't be right."

Earlier this month, machinist Kajel Insang, 23, was killed when a massive explosion rocked a section of the factory.
