Johnson back in contention
published: Monday | April 11, 2005

Johnson

LONDON, CMC:

SEVEN WEEKS after having his contract terminated at Oldham Athletic, Jamaican international Jermaine Johnson has fought his way back into contention at the English League One club.

With the North West England club in need of fire power up front, new Oldham coach Ronnie Moore has again sought the services of Johnson again.

"Jermaine's got to play down the middle and he's a constant threat, there's no doubt," Moore said. "He just needs to improve on his finishing and hopefully we can do that with him."

Johnson, who was given the boot from the club almost two months ago by former manager Brian Talbot, played 74 minutes for the Oldham Reserves on Wednesday.

And though several chances to score fell his way, he failed to convert any the closest being a rasping drive which sailed over the cross bar.

Manager Moore, however, feels that Johnson will improve and is just keen to play him in the right position.

"I think that's his spot," he said. "You've got to play him up there (up front). I think you take a hell of a gamble if you bring him on and play him at right wing like we did at Milton Keynes."

Moore added: "I think at home you might get away with it but away from home when you're looking for discipline and to stay tucked in and do the right things, I don't think so."

Former manager Talbot had blasted Johnson for being indisciplined and having a poor attitude.
