New proposals to deal with crime at UWI
published: Thursday | April 14, 2005

Petrina Francis, Education Reporter

THE CONTROVERSIAL issue of security at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus is to be addressed by the security providers, following a recent spate of crimes on the campus.

A recent press release from the university stated that the security providers have submitted new proposals, which are now being considered.

Carroll Edwards, public relations officer at the university, said a committee has been established to monitor the progress of the new initiatives. She said the proposals will be discussed when the Finance and General Purposes committee meet at the end of the month.

Joe Pereira, deputy principal at the institution, told The Gleaner that he is unaware of all the proposals made by the security providers, but said there has been an increase in the number of security personnel on the campus.

The number of security personnel on the halls of residence at nights has been increased also.

Richard Toomer, president of the Guild of Students, declined to comment on the new proposals, as he said he had not been informed about them. However, he said the guild has been noticing the security changes on the campus, such as additional security vehicles and greater visibility of the security guards on campus.

STRICTER GUIDELINES

The guild president said there also has been an implementation of stricter guidelines regarding access of non-residents onto the residential halls.

In March, the guild of students called for the immediate termination of the existing contract with the campus security providers, as a result of the criminal activities that are taking place on the campus.

In February, a female student was raped on the A.Z. Preston Hall. It was also reported that several students have been robbed on the campus since the start of the year.
