Murders hurtle toward 500
published: Tuesday | April 19, 2005

THE TWO men murdered execution style in the Rose Lane area of west Kingston last Friday were among 33 homicides committed in Jamaica last week, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported yesterday.

This figure is four less than the previous week. Nearly 500 persons have been killed in Jamaica so far this year.

Last Friday, firemen returning from an assignment discovered the charred bodies of Leroy Farquharson and Beighton Williams, 29, also known as 'Scotch Brite', in an open lot. Police theorise that they were shot then their bodies set ablaze.

The CCN also reported that Beswick Broomfield of Ballards Valley in St. Elizabeth was shot and killed by a gunman at Gazeland in that parish Sunday evening.

SHOT IN CAR

According to the CCN, Mr. Broomfield, 51, was sitting in his car on the Gazeland main road at around 10:45 when he was shot. Mr. Broomfield reportedly ran from the car and collapsed; he was taken to the Black River Hospital where he died.

The police say a woman with whom Mr. Broomfield had a recent dispute has been taken into custody by the Nain police.

The CCN also reported that Sabrina Johnson, a British national, was arrested and charged Sunday at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay for breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act. She was allegedly found with 114 grams of ganja while checking in to board a flight to London. She has been charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export ganja. Ms. Johnson is scheduled to appear in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court today.
