When mothers take charge
published: Thursday | April 21, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON MARCH 23, responding to the rising tide of violence in a letter to The Gleaner, I wrote: "Without a ban on firearms, this year and for years to come Jamaican mothers will continue to sacrifice their sons, and daughters as well, not to end slavery, not to defend their country's freedom, but for no other reason than the evil, insane notion of wanting to protect the so-called right of a few to own and use a gun".

Now, whether or not Jamaica ever bans firearms is yet another story, somewhere down the road, But I ask, who is going to argue with the mothers of Jamaica today?

Remember that when the mothers in the United States decided they'd had enough, they literally ended the war in Vietnam and saved countless lives.

The 'Mothers in Crisis' organisation, started by Doreen Billings and reported on in The Sunday Gleaner, April 17, is definitely the way to go.

Please, let's all take a moment and pray God blesses this group mightily and that they get all the support they need.

They have a tough path ahead, but if they save even one young soul from a life of meaninglessness and strife, they will have walked good.

I am, etc.,
