Selection was totally legitimate - Hylton
published: Tuesday | April 26, 2005

FORMER TRADE minister, Anthony Hylton, who is among candidates vying to represent the People's National Party (PNP) as MP in Western St. Andrew, yesterday defended the way he was selected as constituency chairman last December.

"It is simply not the case," he said in response to comments from OT Williams, incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency. Mr. Williams said on Sunday that he still had serious concerns with the way Mr. Hylton was selected last December and that the methods of selection breached the party's constitution.

However, Mr. Hylton said yesterday that the process under which he was selected "was totally legitimate" and was supervised by top party officials.

He also threw his support behind an audit of constituted groups in the constituency, reported to be being carried out currently by the PNP secretariat. He said the audit will help to ensure that there are no complaints when a selection of candidates to represent the PNP is completed.
