THE EDITOR, Sir:
CONGRATULATIONS TO our Prime Minister, the Hon. P.J. Patterson on reaching his 70th birthday.
I took notice of a letter in The Gleaner from a pastor criticising the birthday celebrations. I think that was unkind and uncharitable.
Lest your readers think that such a letter from a pastor is representative of persons in the ministry in Jamaica, let me point out that the recent 34th Synod of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands unanimously resolved to send congratulations to the Prime Minister on reaching his 70th birthday and offered him best wishes for the future.
I wish to commend the persons responsible for organising his birthday celebrations, especially the service of thanksgiving at the Boulevard Baptist Church.
It is heartening to see that, despite the lofty heights our Prime Minister has reached in Jamaica, he has not abandoned his faith in Almighty God to whom he owes allegiance.
May he live to see many more birthdays and remain our leader until the term for which he was duly elected is completed.
I am, etc.,
RICHMOND I. NELSON (REV. DR.)
