A valuable asset saved
published: Friday | April 29, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS shocked when I heard on the news that Seaforth High School feared closure and even moreso when I learnt the reason why my alma mater could close her doors.

Apparently the government overpaid them some money over a three-year period (a fault of govt.) and has now decided to take it back in the form of denying them adequate monies to run the school (I hardly think that J$10,000 can run any high school for a full term).

It's quite interesting that a government that likes to propagate that education is among their list of 'top priorities' should do something like this.

I wonder if the minister thought about the possible repercussions this move could have on the people of St. Thomas, especially the students of Seaforth High School.

Thank God for the mentality we have as Jamaicans, to fight tooth and nail, especially when the going gets tough. This is the attitude of the school's board of directors, Principal Hopeton Henry, the parents of students and the teachers. Thanks to these people, St. Thomas will not lose a valuable asset to her children.

I am, etc.,

LARISA MCBEAN
