published: Friday | April 29, 2005

NATIONAL 200 metres champion Steve Mullings continued his early season form by winning the men's half-lap event at the 2005 LSU Alumni Gold meet at the B. Moore Track and C. Maddox Field House in Louisiana.

Apart from Mullings' victory, Ronetta Smith and Suzette Lee were also winners at the meet.

In the 200m, 'banned' sprinter Mullings, again helped by wind, clocked 20.45 seconds to win the men's 200m in a regional record, erasing the previous mark of 21.19. Louisiana State University's (LSU) Kelly Willie (20.45) and unattached Fernada Blakeley (20.81) finished second and third respectively in the race. The wind reading was 3.0 metres per second.

Jamaica's Yhann Plummer, competing for Southern College, was seventh in 21.00.

In the women's 400m, Smith, a member of Jamaica's 4x400m bronze medal team in Athens, clocked 51.73 for the Tiger Olympians in her victory. She had fellow Jamaican and national 400m hurdles champion Debbie-Ann Parris (52.77) and Allison Beckford (53.74) trailing her to the line.

All three, Smith, Parris and Beckford, along with national 400m champion Nadia Davy carried the Tiger Olympians to victory in the women's 4x400m relay in a regional record 3:34.62.

Davy started and handed over to Smith who passed to Allison who made the final change to Parris as the Jamaicans defeated Louisiana State University 'A' (3:35.97R).

WOMEN'S TRIPLE JUMP

Jamaica's fourth victory came when Lee leapt a regional record 14.16 metres to win the women's triple jump. Former St. Jago athlete Andrea Linton, representing LSU, was third with a leap of 12.88m.

In the women's shot put, former St. Hugh's athlete Nadia Alexander, now at Louisiana Tech, was seventh with a throw of 13.29m.

Meanwhile, former Holmwood athlete Keva Wilkins won the 400-metre event at last Saturday's 34th Annual ASU David Noble Relays held at the ASU Multi-purpose Sports Complex.

Representing Abilene Christina University, Wilkins, the older sister of Champs Class Two 800m champion, Bobby-Gaye, won her race in 55.49, beating Sasha Rolle of South Plains (55.96) and Erin Simpson of Angelo State (56.17).
