Dominica Labour Party wins poll, ends coalition
published: Friday | May 6, 2005

THE DOMINICA Labour Party (DLP) has won a majority 14 of 21 seats in the general election ending its coalition government, according to preliminary results.

The United Workers Party (UWP) is expected to win six seats. The DLP's junior coalition partner, the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), lost its two seats in Parliament.

Charles Savarin, the DFP's party leader, lost to the UWP's Norris Prevost, a former Tourism Minister on his fourth election bid and independent candidate Ronald Toulon beat Herbert Sabaroche, the Health Minister in the previous Roosevelt Skerrit administration.

But there was pre-election violence on a sprawling Amerindian reservation late Wednesday as the two main parties jostled for a marginal seat.

Police reported that one man had his car's windshield smashed after he attempted to enter a roadblock set up by government supporters who were incensed by the last-minute campaigning of the UWP.

The Carib Indians, who live on a 4,000-acre Carib Territory, about 25 north-east of Roseau, have always been a hotbed for eleventh hour canvassing.

The police said they had identified the ringleader but delayed making an arrest in what they described as a hostile environment.
