DISCUSSIONS ARE under way between the Mico Teachers' College and the Ministry of Education with a view to having Mico becoming a university college by September.
Dr. Claude Packer, principal of the Mico, made the announcement yesterday during Research Day at the school's Marescaux Road campus.
Dr. Packer noted that if the college is to survive in a globalized world it needed to move to university status.
The principal said that to make this a reality, Mico would be introducing four other degree programmes by January, next year.
Among these programmes, he said, were the Bachelor of Science in reading and literacy development and Bachelor of Science in mathematics.
Former president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA), Patrick Smith, also endorsed the move by Mico to university status. He said that the institution has been the nurturer of many great educators and that it was only fitting that it becomes a university college. The college hopes to attain full university status by 2010.
