LETTERS OF THE DAY - Full time to end this scourge
published: Friday | May 6, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ONCE AGAIN, our nation has been numbed by brutality of the highest order the killing of three policemen and a security guard within 12 hours.

This attack on law and order is really confirming that our civilization is at risk. These dastardly acts should not be allowed to continue to permeate our society.

But, I hesitantly admit that they will, if we continue to turn a blind eye to lawlessness. It is full time that as a nation we come together and rid ourselves of this scourge. This is not the time to be laying blame at the feet of governments.

It is time for us as a people to be a part of the solution. Too many persons have knowledge of what is going on and are keeping their mouths shut. It is time for us to speak out and halt this 'blood-letting'.

We need to stop this nonsense about being afraid to give information to the police. There are so many channels available to us now channels that do not require identification or direct contact with the police. It is time for us to decide the Jamaica that we want our children and perhaps our grandchildren to grow up in.

This is the time for all law-abiding Jamaicans to bond together and isolate lawlessness. The blood of the innocent is crying out and if we continue to turn a blind eye we are going to pay dearly for our actions or lack thereof. It is time for us to stand up and say 'enough is enough'.

The future and safety of Jamaica is in our hands we all can and must resolve to make a difference.

I am, etc.,

PAT BIGNALL
