WESTERN BUREAU:
THE HANOVER police are hunting for the mastermind behind the multimillion-dollar car-stealing ring that they penetrated three weeks ago, seizing four motor cars and arresting two men.
"We are withholding the names of the accused men for now," acting crime chief for Hanover, Detective Inspector Louie Brown, told The Gleaner this week.
"We theorise that the vehicles were stolen in Kingston and St. Ann between November 2004 and March this year, and sold to unsuspecting persons."
The cars include a 1996 Honda Integra and 1997, 1998 and 1999 Toyota Corolla models.
On Tuesday, analysts from the Government forensic laboratory concluded their examination of the cars and found that the engine and chassis numbers had been tampered with.
Fictitious car documents were also recovered and the police have contacted insurance companies in an effort to locate the original owners.
