Plan Labour Day activities for hurricane victims
published: Monday | May 9, 2005

P.J. Patterson - Prime Minister

I APPLAUD THE Office of National Reconstruction for the work it has accomplished since its existence, to help Jamaica recover from the ravages of Hurricane Ivan.

Approximately 369,685 persons were directly affected by the hurricane and damage has been estimated at over J$35 billion. Our agriculture and housing sectors were the areas that suffered the most damage.

REMARKABLE RECOVERY

Six months after the hurricane, the country has made a remarkable recovery. The ONR has facilitated repairs to schools, households and has made significant contributions to the rehabilitation of farmers. This has not been without the assistance of local and international partners, and I thank those individuals and organisations that have made a contribution to this national effort.

It is natural to expect that based on the extent of the damage there are some areas that are yet to receive assistance under the reconstruction exercise. I assure those persons affected, that the government through the ONR will assist you in your reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.

As the nation contemplates activities to mark Labour Day 2005, I urge communities, service clubs and individuals alike, to plan activities that will enable you to render service to persons who were affected by Hurricane Ivan. Take time out also to prepare your communities and immediate environs for the upcoming hurricane season, as together we seek to minimise further damage.

The ONR from its inception has been transparent and accountable for all its activities and will continue to do so until the exercise has been completed.

I commend the management and staff of the ONR for their contribution to national reconstruction following the passage of Ivan. Much more remains to be accomplished and I encourage Jamaicans to continue to make their donations to this national effort.
