THE EDITOR, SIR:
THE PRIME Minister recently in his budget presentation in the House of Representatives has announced that the National Housing Trust (NHT) is to make a five billion dollar injection towards the Government's education programme. This move leaves me to ask what the real purpose of the National Housing Trust is.
Isn't it that the mission of the NHT is to "improve the quality of life of Jamaicans by facilitating home ownership and community development, particularly among low income persons?" If so , why is the NHT now venturing into other areas outside of its pursuit by injecting as much as $5 billion of money belonging to NHT contributors to the Government's education initiative?
Instead of using this hefty sum of money to improve the trust's ability to better achieve its mission to provide housing for the ordinary Jamaica man and woman, the trust seeks to use this money to fulfill the political agenda of the Patterson Administration.
As a young Jamaican who has been contributing to the trust for many years I believe that the trust has fallen short of living up to its responsibility to facilitate home ownership to low-income persons. This, to the extent that many people like me continue to find it increasingly difficult to come up with the down payment.
I am, etc.,
