'We need to think more'
published: Monday | May 9, 2005

KINGSTON CMC:

DECLARING AN often-repeated suggestion, West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul has demanded his players add a mental approach to their game.

After watching his team being humbled by South Africa in back-to-back one-day international (ODI) matches Saturday and yesterday at Sabina Park, Chanderpaul said it is time that they put some more thought into it.

"We need to think more on our cricket," Chanderpaul said at the post-match press conference yesterday after the Windies lost by eight wickets for the second straight day.

He said his batsmen, who recorded totals of 253 and 152, need to put bigger totals on the board.

"Our batsmen need to stand up (and build long innings). They need to give us a score to fight with," he said.

Chanderpaul praised the visitors' bowling attack for their potency.

"The South African bowlers will always get something with the new ball.

"They always put the ball in the right areas and get it to move around and get wickets. We just have to be ready for it. It doesn't matter what they bowl, morning or evening.

"It doesn't matter if you bat first, or chasing. We still need to put a total on the board. 152 is not a total you want to put up in a one-day game on a decent batting pitch," he said.
