Alcan's latest profits more than double
NEW YORK: ALCAN INC., one of the world's largest aluminum producers, said Monday that its earnings more than doubled in the first quarter as higher aluminum prices helped offset rising costs and a weak dollar.

First banana export to EU since 'Ivan'
SOME 12,500 boxes of bananas valued at US$190,000 (J$11.78 million) were exported to the European Union (EU) on Saturday. Dr. Marshall Hall, chairman of the Banana Export Company, told The Gleaner that Saturday's shipment "went well."


Employers' grouping readies for convention

Hardware show expanded
THE HARDWARE merchants are reporting that their ninth biennial show staged last weekend at the National Arena fulfilled expectations to be the most successful production since its inception in 1989.


Digicel expands roaming
DIGICEL HAS EXPANDED its pre-paid roaming service to Ireland. Customers of the regional telecommunications firm were able to start using their cellphones in Ireland from Friday, the company said in a statement.
