BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

SEVERAL RESIDENTS in Black River, Point and Middle Quarters in St. Elizabeth are still feeling the effects of the heavy rains that lashed parts of the parish on the weekend.

Some of those affected were forced to seek shelter with relatives.

Disaster Preparedness Co-ordinator for St. Elizabeth, Yvonne Morrison, told The Gleaner yesterday that two families who were flooded out in the Santa Cruz area have returned home. She said the Santa Cruz Community Centre was used as a temporary shelter during the floods which lasted two days.

"At this time, we are still carrying out our assessment of the damage that was done in the Santa Cruz and Black River areas. The assessment is being carried out by members of my office and a representative of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security," Ms. Morrison said.

MAIN ROAD BLOCKED

A representative of the National Works Agency (NWA) told The Gleaner that the main road from Black River to Middle Quarters was blocked with mud, stones and other debris. He also noted that a crew from the agency had cleared most sections of the busy thoroughfare by yesterday.

On Sunday, several motorists who were using the Middle Quarters road had to use alternative routes as flood waters had covered some sections of the roadway.
