Ramcharan, Williams want extradition order set aside
published: Tuesday | May 10, 2005

LEGAL ARGUMENTS will continue today in the motion brought by Montego Bay businessmen Leebert Ramcharan and Donovan 'Plucky' Williams who are fighting a legal battle in the Supreme Court for their freedom.

They were ordered extradited to the U.S. in June last year to answer to charges of trafficking cocaine from Jamaica to the United States. The men are asking the Full Court, comprising Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe, Mr. Justice Lloyd Hibbert and Mr. Justice Mahadev Dukharan, to set aside the extradition orders.

Ramcharan and Williams are contending that their extradition order should be set aside and that they should be released from custody because of several flaws in the case that has been brought against them.

They are also contending that the authority did not specify the offences for which they were wanted in the U.S. and that the relevant documents did not state the corresponding offences in Jamaican law.

Attorneys-at-law Frank Phipps, Q.C., and Wentworth Charles, who represent Willliams, made legal submissions yesterday. Lord Anthony Gifford, Q.C., and attorney-at-law Hugh Thompson, are representing Ramcharan.
