Westmoreland Labour Day project selected
published: Tuesday | May 10, 2005

THE WESTMORELAND Parish Council has recorded more than 50 registered projects, and has selected the Bog Community Centre, near Darliston in the eastern section of the parish, for its Labour Day project.

Labour Day will be observed on Monday, May 23.

The decision to also focus on the planting of trees for food, beautification and lumber, received the thumbs-up at a recent Labour Day Committee meeting in Savanna-la-Mar. Over 1,000 such trees have already been sourced.

TRANSPORTATION OF THE TREES

Secretary/Manager of the Westmoreland Parish Council, Patricia Sinclair-Stair, who chaired the meeting, said arrangements have been made for the transportation of the trees, which include mahoe, cedar, mahogany, breadfruit, mango, ackee, avocado, naseberry, guinep and cashew.

She also said that to date, approximately $100,000 has been collected by the parish's Labour Day fund-raising committee, headed by Custos Owen Sinclair.

"I would like to announce that the committee has given the nod to the refurbishing of the Bog Community Centre in Eastern Westmoreland, as the parish's Labour Day project this year. This centre was used as a disaster shelter after the passage of Hurricane Ivan last September, and as is the case with many other shelters across the parish, it was badly vandalised," Mrs. Sinclair-Stair said.

She pointed out that the centre would be given special attention, especially sanitary facilities, a face-lift to the general structure and extensive cleaning and manicuring of the yard.
