SPANISH TOWN:
BELLAS GATE Primary emerged champions of the 2005 Jamaica Broilers Basketball Primary School Competition, when they defeated Good Hope Primary 8-6 in the final at Old Harbour Primary School at the weekend.
The competition, which started in October 2004, is in its eighth year and for two years now it has been sponsored by the Jamaica Broilers Group to the tune of $200,000, with 14 of the 22 primary schools in St. Catherine taking part.
The teams were divided into four groups of which Bellas Gate and Good Hope came out first and second in their respective groups.
GOOD HOPE COMEBACK
In a well-contested match, Bellas Gate led 6-0 in the first quarter, but Good Hope rallied strongly in the second quarter to tie the game six-all.
The teams battled fiercely for the remainder of the contest and amidst a great deal of anxiety, failed to maximise their chances with only Bellas Gate managing to score two more baskets for their 8-6 victory.
Glenda Mills of Bellas Gate was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the competition.
According to Nicole Marshall-Barker of the Jamaica Broilers Group, the company will continue to support the growth of primary school basketball as a way of returning something to the communities.
