Autonomy for the counties
published: Wednesday | May 11, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE ARE three existing counties, Cornwall, Middlesex, and Surrey. Each county should be independently operated by its own government body, overseen by a national government of Jamaica.

These county governments would be elected by the people, creating more opportunity in their communities. Too often some of our most talented Jamaicans in their field of choice have no way out.

The well-known city of Kingston is no longer a place of dreams for most of the unfortunate.

Therefore, we should consider the option of giving these counties the political strength to operate independently. In this light, Jamaica would be stronger in social and economic standings. We would not be giving up any of our national rights (smaller the package, the easier to carry). In addition to that, each county would also carry its own police, universities, colleges, manufacturers, bus and school services. If Jamaica is built on strength, let's add some muscle and give this move some thought.

I am, etc.,
