Insurance brokers robbed
published: Wednesday | May 11, 2005

Tyrone Reid, Staff Reporter

THWAITES

THWAITES FINSON Sharp Insurance Brokers Limited, located in New Kingston was robbed on Sunday morning.

Sources close to the firm told The Gleaner that the hit was worth in excess of $120,000. However, Brett Thwaites, the company's managing director, denied that claim and revealed that the stolen sum was less than half of the alleged amount.

The company's alarm records suggest that the robbery occurred about 10:00 a.m.

It has not been ascertained how the robbers gained entry to the building. However, preliminary investigations indicate that the hit could have been an inside job.

"It seems that somebody with inside knowledge is involved ... they did not ransack the place, they just took the safe and left," Mr. Thwaites told The Gleaner on Monday.

DISAPPOINTED WITH HAWKEYE

He was disappointed with the response from the Hawkeye Electronic Security Limited, which is contracted to secure the premises.

Mr. Thwaites explained that his grouse was based on the fact that the security company responded to the alarm that went off at his company's premises, but left after surveying the compound and concluded that nothing "untoward" was happening.

"They should have been caught because it seems that the people (security) were on the compound when they (robbers) were inside the building," he said.

"Luckily for them we are an insurance broker and we are properly insured. There is little or no loss," he said.

Mr. Thwaites revealed that all the thieves took was a safe that stored petty cash records, cheque books and some petty cash.

"It is a proper anti-theft safe weighing quite a few pounds. It is going to take a lot of work to break into it, probably more than the money is worth," he said.
