14-y-o stabbed to death
published: Friday | May 13, 2005

Nagra Plunkett, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

A 14-year-old student of Flankers Primary and Junior High School in St. James was stabbed to death by a 13-year-old girl on Wednesday night.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the deceased has been identified as Neville McCrae otherwise known as 'Dex'. The 13-year-old who attends the same school, has since been taken into police custody. The boy reportedly had attacked the girl who in turn retaliated by stabbing him.

Mediators from the Peace and Justice Centre in Flankers, Montego Bay are being mobilised to reconcile the community in the wake of the killing.

"The incident is very depressing for the community. I will be meeting with the mediators in the community to see how we are going to approach the matter," Marilyn Nash, administrator at the centre told The Gleaner yesterday. She said the Victims Support Unit will also be called in and counselling initiated "in order for things not to escalate."

FAMILIES VISITED

Mrs. Nash also said she will be doing personal visits with the two affected families.

However, some residents are contending that the police reports are inaccurate and that the girl was the attacker.

Efforts to get a comment from school officials were unsuccessful.

Sydney Grant, regional director of the Child Development Agency based in Montego Bay, said he has briefed his officers of the incident and one of them will be sent into the community to offer counselling to the victim's family.

"There is no doubt that after the girl is taken before the court, we will have close interaction with her," Mr. Grant said.
