Wrongly ticketed by the police
published: Friday | May 13, 2005

THE EDITOR SIR:

The Buff Bay Police have been ticketing motorists for speeding in the western side of Portland between Orange Bay and Buff Bay, but the road has not been zoned by the requisite street signs. Many motorists have been ticketed and paid fines to avoid going to court.

My own experience is that on the day of trial the officer in question swore to the court that the requisite signs were on the road, which led to the judge going out on the road to see the signs. Lo and behold there were no signs on the road. In fact, between Buff Bay and Port Antonio there is absolutely no zoning sign. Between Buff Bay and Constant Spring Road in St. Andrew, only two signs are placed on leaving Buff Bay.

If the police with such sweeping powers continue to violate the laws of the land and infringe on the rights of citizens, how will Jamaicans ever be able to trust the police? Those who are found doing this should be penalised or expelled from the force.

I am, etc.,

SYLVESTER COLE
