Road to be named after Walsh
published: Saturday | May 14, 2005

FORMER WORLD leading wicket-taker Courtney Walsh will soon have a road named in his honour.

The name of Derrymore Road will be changed to Courtney Walsh Road, the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Council (KSAC) announced.

Ambassador-at-Large Walsh, 42, played 132 Test matches for the West Indies in a career spanning over 13 years, in which he took 519 Test wickets.

"Derrymore Road will very shortly be named Courtney Walsh Road in keeping with our commitment to name areas in the city off sporting icons," the KSAC statement outlined.

Derrymore Road is the road on which Melbourne Cricket Club is located. Walsh is the club's current president.

The world renowned cricketer also played many years for Melbourne, the club which produced the likes of West Indies players Michael Holdings, Robert Samuels, Marlon Samules, Carlton Baugh, Donovan Pagon and Arthur Barrett.

This is just another honour for Walsh, who represented the West Indies in 205 One-day Internationals, taking 227 wickets.
