Industrial action by cops averted
published: Tuesday | May 17, 2005

COMMISSIONER OF Police, Lucius Thomas, has intervened in the impasse between Government and members of the Police Federation to avert any planned industrial action set for today.

"Any negative action taken will not only be injurious to the citizens of this country but will jeopardise any positive outcome that can be attained at the negotiating table," said Commissioner Thomas in a statement released by the Constabulary Communication Network yesterday afternoon.

He was scheduled yesterday evening to meet with National Security Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips, and State Minister of Finance, Fitz Jackson, to find a resolution to the problem.

Government and police negotiators have been locked in wage and fringe benefits negotiations for more than a year. They met twice last week, but the second meeting on Friday ended in a stalemate.
