Trauma centre on cards for schools
published: Tuesday | May 17, 2005

THE MINISTRY of Education, Youth and Culture is in the process of evaluating the Safe Schools Programme and establishing a trauma centre for students affected by violence.

Maxine Henry-Wilson, Minister of Education, made the disclosure recently, while speaking at her National Heroes Circle office in Kingston.

Under the programme, police personnel are placed in schools to reduce the incidence of violence.

While admitting that the programme has worked to an extent, as there have been good reports of the impact of police presence in schools, Mrs. Henry-Wilson noted that more initiatives have to be undertaken to address the violence that is plaguing many schools. She said there is a proposal to establish a trauma centre which is to be located in St. Catherine.

The Education Minister explained that St. Catherine was selected because of the high incidence of violence and anti-social behaviour in that region.
