Truck driver convicted of manslaughter
published: Wednesday | May 18, 2005

A HOME Circuit Court jury has convicted Lloyd Dacres, 27, truck driver, of Lawrence Tavern, St. Andrew, of three counts of manslaughter.

The charges stemmed from a motor vehicle accident at Tom's River at the border of St. Andrew and St. Mary where three men were killed.

Justice Leighton Pusey remanded Dacres in custody until May 27 when he will be sentenced.

The Crown, represented by Dirk Harrison, Crown Counsel, led evidence that Dacres was driving a truck along the Tom's River main road on January 23, 2003.

CRASHING INTO A BAR

Dacres began overtaking three motor vehicles when the truck he was driving hit Roy Mullings of Tom's River, who was walking along the soft shoulder of the road.

Witnesses testified that the truck crashed into a bar hitting Henry Martin of Tom's River and Selvin Smith of Dover Road, Portland, who were inside the bar.

The three men died as a result of the injuries they received.

Dacres, in his defence, denied overtaking any motor vehicles along the road.
