Fear grips Vauxhall High family
published: Wednesday | May 18, 2005

Petrina Francis, Education Reporter

THERE IS a wave of fear pervading the Vauxhall High School in East Kingston following the recent invasion of the school by armed men.

Angela Chaplain, principal of the school, told The Gleaner yesterday that a teacher's husband, who went to the school to pick her up on Monday night during the pouring rain, was attacked and beaten by men who invaded the school.

WAVES OF FEAR

She added that armed men entered the school compound last Thursday. This, she said, sent waves of fear throughout the school community and caused a number of students to depart for home shortly after the incident. The principal noted that attendance has fluctuated since the incident.

Ms. Chaplain said that the intrusion by members of the community is a growing concern and has been exacerbated by a damaged perimeter fence, caused by Hurricane Ivan.

TEACHERS NERVOUS

The principal said that a letter was sent to the Ministry of Education informing them of the situation.

Meanwhile, the incidents have left the teachers at Vauxhall nervous.

"We do not know when something is going to happen. It makes us very nervous. You're teaching your class and you see shadows behind you and you have to be spinning around to look," a teacher told The Gleaner.
