Easy win puts Portmore in the lead
published: Thursday | May 19, 2005

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

WOLFE

PORTMORE UNITED moved back to the top of the standings when they defeated sixth-place Village United 2-0 in their Wray and Nephew National Premier League fixture at Ferdie Neita Park yesterday.

In a leisurely played first half, Portmore went ahead in the 34th minute when Oneil McDonald inched past his marker to head past goalkeeper Allien Whittaker.

The goal seemed to awaken Portmore who began to surge forward in search of more goals.

They found what they were looking for in the 43rd minute when the unmarked Kemeel Wolfe rifled past the keeper's near post to put Portmore United two goals up.

Village United began the second half in an optimistic fashion with good bouts of possession.

However, they received a major setback when Leon Irving received a red card for a rash retaliatory challenge.

Portmore did not look at all a focused team in the second half and began to be careless with possession.

STEPPED UP ATTACKS

With their foot off the accelerator they seemed content to lay back and allow the 10-man Village United to attack, hoping to catch them on the counter.

With time running out and Village United pressing for an equaliser, Portmore began to step up the attacks looking for a third goal which never came.

Despite that, the three points gained from the win lifted them to 63 points above Harbour View (62), which suffered a shock defeat against relegation-threatened Invaders.

Portmore's coach Paul Young was not altogether impressed with his team's performance.

"The important thing is that we won the game but our performance was very below par. In the second half,we were very laid back and did not execute how we wanted to."
