THE EDITOR, Sir:
MR. MAURICE Azan was murdered last Saturday in his place of business. I never met the man; I only had conversations on the telephone with him, the last one being on Friday evening, where he wished me a blessed day and promised that we would meet the following week.
I had a series of conversations with him the week leading up to his death, and in my business of insurance, I must say I found his honesty refreshing; he always levelled with me, but in an old school, wise beyond his many decades manner.
Mr. Azan was a stalwart in his community, someone who represented goodness and strength. It was this very strength that would be his downfall. Now Maurice Azan's family, the community of May Pen and Jamaica at large, we struggle to make sense of the senseless.
Why don't the people of the community flush out these cowards and bring them to justice? I call them cowards because they are just that to murder an elderly man whose only crime was to refuse to succumb to threats that he hand over his hard-earned money to them. I challenge that marketplace of people to call in anonymously to their police, Mr Shields even. And the life you save may be your own. Those rats that you are protecting will be killing again, and YOU could be next.
I am, etc.,
