THE GOVERNMENT will be making amendments to the Labour Relations and Industrial Disputes Act to allow non-unionised workers access to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT).
Labour and Social Security Minister, Horace Dalley, made the announcement during his recent contribution to the 2005/06 Sectoral Debate in Gordon House.
He said the move was necessary as there had been an increase in the number of complaints received regarding pay and conditions of employment from non-unionised workers during last year.
There was a 35 per cent increase in the number of complaints received regarding pay and conditions of employment last year, when compared to 2003.
The minister revealed that the number of investigations carried out by labour officers arising from these complaints also increased by 81 per cent.
There was also an increase in the number of settlements made by employers as well as the amounts collected and paid over to the workers.
