Major anti-doping seminar on today

Sherone Simpson... will speak about Jamaican athletes for a dope-free sport.

THE NEWLY-FORMED Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) will host one-day symposium at the Jamaica Conference Centre today.

Keynote speaker will be David Howman, director general of the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA). Howman will speak about WADA and its fight against doping in sport and the implications for the Caribbean.

Other speakers include JADCO director Anne Shirley, who will do a presentation on the international convention against doping in sport; consultant psychiatrist Dr. Aggrey Irons who will speak on the health consequences of doping; and International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Area Leader Neville 'Teddy' McCook scheduled to speak on the role and responsibilities of national sports federations, athletes and athlete support personnel.

Olympic relay gold medallist Sherone Simpson is also down to address the symposium in the afternoon on the topic 'Jamaican athletes for a dope-free sport'.

Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sports, Portia Simpson Miller, will deliver welcoming remarks at 9:00 a.m.

JADCO was formed as part of the Government's commitment to the fight against doping in sport.

Interim committee chairman is Dr. Marion Bullock-DuCasse, with deputy Professor Stephen Vasciannie.
