Campbell on fire
published: Monday | May 23, 2005

CAMPBELL

JAMAICA'S OLYMPIC Games 200m champion Veronica Campbell was on fire at yesterday's Adidas Track Classic at the Home Depot Centre in Carson, California.

Representing Adidas Campbell, the fastest 200m runner in the world for the last five seasons, blew away a Nike field to win the women's 100m in a world leading 10.96 seconds.

Campbell's victory was so impressive that the second place athlete, American Muna Lee, was some distance back in 11.20 and Angella Daigle, also of the United States, third in 11.24.

It made Campbell the first woman to dip under 10 seconds this season, moving ahead of fellow Jamaica and Olympic 4x100m relay gold medal team member Sherone Simpson's (11.03) on the world list.

In the women's 400, Jamaicans Ronetta Smith and Novlene Williams finished second and third behind Jamaica-born Sanya Richards.

Smith was timed in 51.23, while Williams crossed the line in 51.69 behind world leader Richards, who stopped the clock in an impressive 50 seconds flat. Richards' world leading time of 49.96 came at the National Stadium at the Jamaica Inter-national Invitational on May 7.

The most impressive time of the meet though, came in the women's 200, minus Campbell. American Allyson Felix, who was second in the Athens 200m, won in an impressive 22.14. Felix' time is by far the best time this season and the third fastest in the past five years.

Olympic Games 100m silver medallist Lauryn Williams (22.27) and Latasha Colander (22.39) also went under the previous season best of 22.52 that was recorded by Colander.

National 400m champion Brandon Simpson (45.25) and Sanjay Ayre (45.70) were third and fifth in the men's 400m event won by the Michael Johnson-coached Jeremy Wariner, the Olympic champion of United States (44.53).

Michelle Burger was seventh in the women's 400m hurdles in 59.79. The event was won by Tanisha Mills of USA in 55.57.
