published: Tuesday | May 24, 2005

THE HUGH Shearer Foundation has announced the first scholarship at the bachelor's level in remembrance of the former Prime Minister, Hugh Lawson Shearer.

The scholarship will be awarded to a primary school teacher from the parish of Trelawny, the birth place of Mr. Shearer.

The scholarship, which covers a degree in primary education, is valued at $200,000 per annum for a period of three years, tenable at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.

According to Dr. Denise Eldemire-Shearer, widow of the late prime minister and chairman of the Hugh Shearer Foundation, "This is the first anniversary since his death last July and the foundation is celebrating his life and contribution with the announcement of this scholarship."
