Rain washes away Portland lead
published: Tuesday | May 24, 2005

Rain was the deciding factor in last weekend's seventh round of matches in the Red Stripe Cricket Championship.

For the second week running, leaders Portland emerged the worst hit with another no-result, this time against St. Ann.

With only 16 overs of play possible in just over an hour, Portland had to settle for one point from the no-result. They were forced to endure a similar situation in the previous round against Young Jamaica.

The no-result means they are now joined atop the points standings by Westmoreland Parish and Police, which both secured first innings victories.

Westmoreland and Police secured first innings honours against Hanover and Kingston and St. Andrew.

St. Thomas also secured first innings victory over Young Jamaica at Goodyear Oval, while the other matches between Clarendon and Boys' Town, and St. James and Trelawny ended in a no-result.

At Kaiser Sports Club where no play was possible on Saturday's opening day, Garnet White (2-19) took both St. Ann wickets as they were 34 for two. Leon Garrick topscored with 13 before ended play.

At Elletson Road, half centuries from Junior Forbes, 83, and Ralston Nelson, 60, carried Police to 223 and first innings honours over Kingston & St. Andrew.

Kingston & St. Andrew, with the help of 55 penalty runs, scored 208 with Gary Pink getting 66 in their first innings. In the second innings they were 106-5.

At Elgin Town, aided by 55 penalty runs and Chris Miller's unbeaten 64, Westmoreland made use of the limited time to beat Hanover on first innings.

Hanover had earlier scored 158 of which Damian Davidson got 88.

At Goodyear Oval, St. Thomas consolidated their good first day performance to take first innings points and came close to victory against Young Jamaica.

Young Jamaica, the national Under-19 team gaining preparation for the upcoming regional championships, suffered at the hands of their captain Jamie Trenchfield, who hit an impressive 80 for St. Thomas to win on first innings.

St. Thomas scored 233-8 and were 47-3 in their second innings. Young Jamaica were first dismissed for 168 as only John Ross Campbell, 47, made any useful contribution. Batting a second time, Young Jamaica scored 116, of which Marlon Johnson got 40.

At Jarrett Park, St. James were 119 for seven before rain intervened, forcing play on Sunday's second day to be abandoned.
