Marion Jones expected to run on Sunday
published: Tuesday | May 24, 2005

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP)

TRIPLE OLYMPIC gold medalist Marion Jones is expected to compete in the 100 metres on Sunday at the FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands, in what would be her first appearance in Europe this season.

"Marion would very much like to come, and we don't have any reason to oppose her coming," Hengelo meet director Fedde Zwanenburg said yesterday.

The American sprinter has been shunned by many European meet organizers since being linked to the BALCO steroid scandal in the United States. The Euro Meetings Group, which represents many of Europe's top meets, has recommended against inviting her. Jones is also expected to run on June 1 in Milan, Italy.

Zwanenburg said he expected to have a final decision tomorrow. He said he was waiting to receive confirmation from the sport's governing body, the International Association of Athletics Federa-tions, that Jones has never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
