... and in St Mary
published: Wednesday | May 25, 2005

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

BOTH THE civic-minded and the more politically inclined turned out in their numbers in St. Mary on Monday, to ensure that some meaningful work was done for Labour Day.

The cleaning of the Simon Gully in Enfield was the main parish project. The decision to clean the gully followed the persistent flooding of Enfield and adjoining communities whenever there is heavy rainfall in the area.

Mayor of Port Maria Bobby Montague said the staff of the St. Mary Parish Council, uniformed groups and members of the parish disaster committee along with other volunteers took part in the exercise. Two tractors and a tipper truck assisted in removing several loads of debris from the area.

Other projects in St. Mary included the installation of sidewalks and construction of drains in the Richmond area by Deputy Mayor Richard Creary. There was also a work team comprising taxi operators, the police and citizens.

Drains were cleaned in Hartlands, Hampstead and Sandside by community groups while Tricia Broderick led a group which repainted street signs in the Oracabessa area. Similar work was done in Annotto Bay.

In the Boscobel area, members of staff of Beaches Boscobel assisted in repairing potholes on Back Street in the community while councillor for the area Michael Belnavis led a team that did renovation work on the bus shed in Retreat.

Pothole-riddled roads in Albion Mountain and Richard's Pen were filled.
