THREE CASES of murder are set to be tried in the Easter sitting of the Hanover Circuit Court which commenced yesterday in Lucea. A total of 14 cases are to be tried during the session which is slated to last three weeks.
There are two cases of carnal abuse, three cases of murder, five cases of wounding with intent, one case of causing death by dangerous driving, one case of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and two cases of rape.
In his opening remarks, presiding judge, Justice Wesley James, expressed concern about the rising levels of crime in the parish.
He said, "Crime is on the increase in small Hanover. Years ago, judges used to come here and not have a single murder in front of them. Such was the reputation of Hanover."
Justice James also called for the full co-operation of the jurors present. "As soon as circuit comes around, some people come with some old age complaints which suddenly reappear. Nevertheless, the few cases which are there to be tried will require your assistance."
