Business closedown will work

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I NOTICED that the Letter of the Day in the May 24, 2005 online edition of the Jamaica Gleaner was titled 'Business closedown will not work'. Well, I beg to disagree. We can't all just sit on our hands and cry out for the Government to do something about the crime. By all indications the Government lacks the political will to take the draconian measures needed to stem the crime rate. We have to do something to jolt the government and the citizenry at large into sitting up and doing more than just making paltry gestures at solving the problem.
I say the business closedown is a start. Everyone will be affected in some way and they will be aware of the message being sent. After all, even criminals depend on businesses to provide the goods and services necessary for their well-being. If things continue going down the current path, the number of entrepreneurs in Jamaica will continue to diminish, and with it any serious chance for economic prosperity.
I say, rather than complain that the business closedown won't solve the problem, why not think of ways to build the momentum that it is likely to generate? Hopefully, at some point in time, all sections of our society will feel compelled to move beyond complaining, with each person doing whatever little they can to thwart criminal activity and help to bring the criminals among us to justice.
I am, etc.,
