Hugh Shearer Foundation announces scholarship
published: Thursday | May 26, 2005

SHEARER

THE HUGH Shearer Foundation, on the occasion of the 82nd anniversary of the birth of the former Prime Minister on May 18, marked the occasion with the announcement of a scholarship in primary education.

The first scholarship at the Bachelor's level will be awarded to a primary school teacher from the parish of his birth, Trelawny.

Valued at J$200,000.00 per annum, the three-year scholarship will be tenable at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

Three years ago at the launch of the Hugh Shearer Foundation, the Bank of Nova Scotia, Jamaica, decided that on the Friday nearest his birthday, the Bank would have a dress down and the proceeds from this event would go toward the Foundation's primary school project.

This is the first anniversary of his birth since his death last July, and the Foundation is celebrating his life and contribution with the announcement of this scholarship.
