MORE THAN 250 illegal firearms and over 3,000 assorted rounds of ammunition have been recovered by the police since the start of the year. Five of these guns were seized over the past 72 hours during separate police operations across the island.
Two of the guns were seized about 12:30 a.m. yesterday by members of the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID).
Reports are that two men were spotted in the Monk Town area of Gorden Pen, St. Catherine, when, on the approach of the police, they ran leaving behind a Calico submachine gun, fitted with a magazine that holds 100 rounds of ammunition. Assistant Superintendent Victor Barret said a 9-mm Larcen pistol was also seized during the operation.
On Wednesday, the Lacovia police in St. Elizabeth found a 9-mm Ruger pistol and a pan with 100 assorted rounds of ammunition in an open lot at Coffee Pen district. No one was arrested.
ONE ARRESTED
And on Tuesday, two illegal firearms were seized and one person arrested in connection with one of the weapons. Charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition is Nataki Williams, 21, of Lowell Avenue, Duhaney Park.
According to the police, Williams was seen acting in a suspicious manner at the intersection of Duhaney Avenue and Baldwin Crescent. He was searched and a .38 revolver with serial number erased, found in his possession.
The other gun, a 9-mm Ruger pistol, was seized following a confrontation between a gunman and members of a police party in the Torrington Park area of Kingston. The police said the gunman ran leaving the weapon behind.
