Nothing wrong with dreaming
published: Friday | May 27, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE PRIVATE Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and other business interests in solidarity against crime decided to close their business for a day.

Will workers, mostly people who can barely eke out a living, be compensated for this day of protest? I surely hope so as it is the right thing for protesting businesses to do.

While we are in the protest mode, we should have, as in a day of prayer, a day of ethics; a day where we make an appeal to one and all for a cessation of all unethical and/or criminal activities.

On this day, we should have no taking or offering of bribes; no greasing of palms to get things done; no speeding; no compromising or breaches of trust; no breaking of company rules.

On this day we should pledge to report to the authorities any and all criminal conduct. The business community, some of whom are tax evaders (also a crime), should pledge to pay their taxes.

I doubt this will ever happen. Again, there is nothing wrong with dreaming.

I am, etc.,
