KINGSTON'S MAYOR Desmond McKenzie has lashed out at the impending transfer of Errol Greene from the Kingston City Centre Improvement Company (KCCIC) to head the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), describing the move as disrespectful and a threat to plans for the redevelopment of downtown Kingston.
As a result, he said "if this report is correct, my administration will be calling upon Mr. Greene to resign his position with the KSAC prior to taking up any appointment with the other entity," Mayor McKenzie said at a press conference held at the Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston yesterday.
According to the mayor, Mr. Greene was still employed as the town clerk of the KSAC. "We were very surprised to hear publicly of this decision without any prior reference to us or consultation with the KSAC," Mr. McKenzie explained.
But yesterday Lorraine Robinson, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Sports said Mr. Greene's appointment had still not been confirmed. She said "we asked the (KCCIC) if they would be prepared to release him, (and) I also spoke with the Municipal Services Commission because they are the ones who agreed to Mr. Greene's secondment from the KSAC to the KCCIC...I had actually sent them a formal letter to ask if they would give their blessing to any arrangement for the secondment to be transferred to National Solid Waste, (but) I haven't got a response from them yet."
Media reports have suggested that Mr. Greene's appointment would become effective June 1.
LEVEL OF COMMITMENT
Mayor McKenzie charged that such a move was not only an indication of the disregard the Local Government Ministry has for the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), but also speaks to the level of commitment the Government has for plans for the redevelopment of downtown Kingston for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Ms. Robinson said she had tried on three occasions to contact Mr. McKenzie when the reports surfaced, but to no avail.
