Support the JCF
published: Saturday | May 28, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM writing to express my appreciation to the few members of the police force who are doing their jobs despite the criticisms and the low income. I have my concerns about the 45 per cent increase over two years. However, in this time we need to be supportive of the JCF.

I recently found out that policemen and women do not receive additional money for working on holidays and in disasters. I really think we have subconsciously equated our policemen and women to robots. ( I myself being guilty of this.) Imagine working for eight hours per day, six days a week and dealing with at least 20 Jamaicans per day; this in itself without being on a murder scene is stressful.

I particularly want to relate an incident that happened to me two years ago. I lost my passport after completing an interview I had with the Student Loan Bureau. I reported the matter to the police and the person who took the report was rude. About a month later an individual called me demanding $30,000 for the return of the passport with my U.S. visa. Of course I was sceptical about going to the police in light of the fact that I had experienced rudeness on the first occasion.

Contrary to my expectation they were 'super' nice. In fact I would like to thank these individuals openly, Inspector Lewis (Cross Roads), Detective Blake, Leonard Watson (Half-Way Tree) Corporal Bailey (Harman Barracks). My passport was returned to me with the help of these officers and I just want to say a big thank you, and continue doing your job.

I am etc.,
