REPUTED MATTHEWS Lane area leader, Donald 'Zekes' Phipps, was remanded in custody yesterday by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, when he appeared in the Corporate Area Criminal Court on charges of unlawful possession of property. He is scheduled to return to court on June 14.

Mr. Phipps who was picked up by Operation Kingfish a week ago, was charged on Thursday following several days of intensive interrogation. He was arrested in connection with $18 million which was found in a vault at his Highland Drive home in Havendale, St. Andrew.

A report released by the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) yesterday said Mr. Phipps failed to give a satisfactory account of the large sum which includes J$8.35 million, over US$152,000, $9,020 pounds sterling and Can$3,980.

Last October over $10 million was found at a store operated by Mr. Phipps on Matthews Lane, West Kingston. The money was later returned. But while Mr. Phipps has been charged, he is still being questioned in connection with last month's double murder of Deighton Williams and Rodney Farquharson, both of Bayshore Park in Harbour View, St. Andrew.
