Slow progress in Kraal case
published: Saturday | May 28, 2005

Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

THE OFFICE of the Director of Public Prosecutions on Thursday handed over to defence lawyers all the outstanding statements and videotapes in the case of Superintendent Reneto Adams and the other five policemen charged with murder.

They are to be tried on September 19 for the murder of four civilians at Kraal, Clarendon. The murders took place on May 7, 2003.

DOCUMENTS

The documents were handed over when the six policemen appeared in the Home Circuit Court.

Defence lawyers, including K. Churchill Neita, Q.C., said they were requesting the names of the witnesses the prosecution was going to call so they could interview those who were not going to be called. They said they needed to know the names of the witnesses so they could prepare the defence.

Mrs. Justice Marva McIntosh set the case for mention on July 7 with the hope that the issue will be dealt with by then.

When the policemen appeared in court last month, their lawyers had complained about the outstanding statements. Mr. Justice Courtney Daye agreed with the lawyers that the case was dragging on for too long and set the case for mention on Thursday.

The other policemen charged are Corporal Patrick Coke, Constables Shane Lyons, Roderick Colleyard, Lynford Gordon and Devon Bernard.

POLICE PARTY

The Crown is alleging that on May 7, 2003, a police party, led by SSP Adams, the former head of the disbanded Crime Management Unit (CMU), went to Kraal in search of Bashington Douglas, otherwise called 'Chen Chen'.

The policemen went to a house in the district where they allegedly shot and killed Lewena Thompson, Angella Richards, Kirk Gordon and Matthew James.

The policemen are on bail and one of the conditions of their bail is that they must report to the Commissioner's Office on Fridays.
