DOVER DELIVERED
published: Sunday | May 29, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

DESPITE THE intermittent shower at the Dover raceway on Labour Day, the stellar line up of drivers put their best foot forward to provide the fair-sized crowd with non-stop excitement.

"It is one of the most exciting race meet we have seen at Dover in a long time," said Peter Rae, president of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC).

There were stand out performances from perennial champion David Summerbell Jr., Marck Creary, Peter Rae and Montegonians Chippy Addison, Junior Barnes and Lenny Burke.

STUNNED HIS RIVALS

Creary who was winning his second race at Dover since making his debut four years ago, stunned his rivals in the first GTS race of the day. It was a top class performance which had the crowd screaming their heads off.

Driving a red, Mitsubishi Evolution One racing car, Creary started in the midst of the pack on the wet and slippery track, racing bumper to bumper and dicing for position, he then began overtaking his rivals one by one in the five lap event.

On the penultimate lap he challenged Summerbell for the lead and eventually overtook him, after exiting the 'Nankang Stretch' and approaching the left angled Carib Cement corner. Summerbell's car spun out and before going on to take the chequered flag.

"When I saw it began raining, I knew that it was my race," said Creary, whose car was equipped with rain tyres.

KUDOS TO TEAM EXPRESS

An airline pilot by profession, Creary was converted from a die-hard motorsports fan to now a bright and promising star. He attributes his success to date to his former mechanic and close friend, Courtney Thompson and his current crew, Team Express Racing.

The other GTS race whetted the fans' appetite for more racing. This was a highly competitive event, which according to some fans, is one of the most exciting races in the annals of Dover.

At one stage of the event, there was a ding dong battle between Summerbell and Peter Rae. Both vehicles were parallel, doing lap times of 1.23 seconds. Summerbell in his Motor Sales/Paint Shop Mitsubishi Evolution 5 and Rae with his DHL RX7 Mazda were locked neck to neck, negotiating the sharp corners.

"This is one of the most exciting race of my life; it was really competitive," said Summerbell, who won the event.

Meanwhile Rae has described the event as the race of his life. Apart from the excitement in the GTS Class, Lenny Burke, Chippy Addison and Junior Barnes were outstanding. Sebastien Rae was the lone driver who dominated the go-kart events.
